Is there something that just makes you so mad you could slap someone…possibly with a hot skillet right on the back of the head? Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme, but after my shift last night, the option is looking more and more tempting.
First off, let me make something very clear, as customers YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF CLOSING TIMES! If a restaurant is open until 10pm, do not waltz in there with a party of 12 at 9:45pm. You will be the most hated person in the entire building. If you know that there is a function that just let out, be a doll, and let the hostess/host know so he/she can alert the managers, servers, kitchen workers, etc.
Another thing, if you know you are going to have a large party, CALL THE RESTAURANT AND LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE COMING! A simple phone call saying “Hey, we will be there in about 20 minutes with 14 people” can make a world of difference.
Restaurants do this thing where once the “rush” is over, they will cut down to the closing servers. In my case, this means there is only two servers on the dining room side and one bartender. So when 15 tables walk in at once and we had no warning… you can imagine things get a little crazy.
Also, when these random rushes happen, and I tell you that there will be a 10-15 minute wait, DO NOT QUESTION ME! I am the hostess, I know my servers, I know when they are in the weeds…YOU DON’T! Do not ask me “Well there are empty tables, why can’t you sit us?” Well thank you captain obvious, like I couldn’t see those tables before you pointed them out. Servers need time to catch up, they need time to greet the 6 tables I just sat them. If this is really too much to ask of you…I have NO PROBLEM watching you walk out that door. You probably weren’t going to tip well anyways 🙂
